    Is it possible to manually delete the 5 incomplete incrementals and then run the backup again so that it starts from the last succesfull incremental? For the record, the incomplete incrementals are the last 5 in the backup chain, they aren't in the middle of it. I think this means that the entire backup chain is now corrupt and I need to do a full backup again. Any idea whay migh be the cause of this?

No, it is not possible to store fulls and incrementals separately. To avoid such situations in future, consider lowering retention or switching to forever incremental backup method.
